Hi,
I have a couple of questions: Does 'Addon/Parked Domains' mean that I can use more than 1 domain on one account (without that merely a forwarding to sub-folders is used for the others)? I have 3 personal websites (.uk domains) that are quite small and attract little traffic (less than 100MB / 500MB/month altogether) and for which I feel I am paying too much when I have a separate account each. If yes, how would this be organized from the control panel? Could I still manage each domain separately or would the logfiles for instance be combined for all the domains?. Also, what Apache modules can I configure myself with .htaccess? Would I be able to write my own mod_rewrite and mod_security rules? Thomas |

Hello Thomas,
Yes that is exactly what parked/addon domain means, say you have abc.com and abc2.com domains, you can add them to your existing domain say abc3.com under same single control panel, it will just create a folder with that name.If you require separate control panel and logins you would require reseller. The stats/logs will be under one single control panel. But from your post i think you do not like one control panel for 3 sites or subfolders for those sites, but thats what addon/parked domain basically does,so best option would be reseller account. Mod_rewrite shouldnt be a problem but mod_security could be, we do not restrict to use of .htacess but due to stringent secuirty rules it might not work , as we do not know what exactly you plan to use .htaccess file for, I personally use it basically to allow certain ips access to certain areas of site. So, it should work for you just fine. Hi,
Thanks for your reply. What I am concerned about with regard to the 'add-on' and 'parked' domains is that search engines will recognize that the domains are actually on the same account and penalize my rankings for this. As far as I found out now after some googling, a 'parked' domains is apparently merely a browser redirect as used for instance by many domain registrars; some use framed redirections for this, but even this would obviously not get the pages indexed under the domain name that is being re-directed but merely under the target domain to which it redirects (if at all). On the other hand, in the case of 'add-on' domains, most references I found on the web claimed that this would be completely transparent and thus unnoticeable to search engines (as apparently this is an internal server thing). Still, I found also a reference which claimed that search engines would notice this and for instance ignore links between the two for the ranking of pages. Could you shed some light on this? I am using mod_security at the moment to keep out some badly programmed robots which get trapped on my pages as apparently they consider each anchor on the page as a link and pull off the whole page again. As this can use a lot of bandwidth, I have blocked now all requests containing a hash sign (which legitimate requests shouldn't contain). I could do this also with mod_rewrite, but using mod_security is more straightforward. Thomas |

Hi,
I am not sure how addon domain would effect your pageranking for a domain, cause its not the ip or location that matters its the domain itself and links to it.But i am not a seo expert so can't help you there. And i am not sure how you can use mod_security cause from what i have been told it's server side install which has been installed and configured, but using .htaccess i am not sure if you can set any mod_secuirty rules on shared profiles but i have not tried it or seen anyone mention of mod_secuirty using .htaccess file. But you can signup and if you dont like it or cant get things going i can always refund the money. Cheers |

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, with my present host I can use mod_security from .htaccess on a shared server, and I would very much prefer if to have it this way. Maybe you could find out more in this respect with regard to the servers you are using. The whole thing is not an urgent matter by the way. I have still about 6 months left for my present hosting, and at the moment I am merely having a preliminary look into potentially better hosting options after that. Best regards, Thomas |

Cheers [/quote] Thanks for the offer, I might get back to it somewhat closer towards the end of the year. I should be able to convert my existing mod_security rules to mod_rewrite anyway (although I haven't tested this yet), but it would be good in any case if I could test an account for a few weeks before actually attaching my domains to it. Best regards, Thomas |
